On Thursday, April 3, the President of Ukraine made a working visit to the Chernihiv region. As Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared on social media, he came “to stand in solidarity with the people in Yahidne and to honor the memory of what transpired here during the Russian occupation.”
“I toured a school where the Russians confined the entire population for nearly a month. This act stands out as one of the most ruthless Russian atrocities of this conflict, a crime against humanity and all that is humane,” Zelensky remarked.
He mentioned that significant efforts have been made to rebuild and restore Yahodne. Currently, initiatives are underway to create a memorial to commemorate the hardships endured by the people.
“None of us will ever forget or excuse Russia for its actions,” the president concluded.
Ukrainian forces liberated Yagodny from Russian occupiers on April 3, 2022. The village was under occupation for 27 days. Throughout this duration, the Russian invaders kept all residents in the school basement. 350 adults and children were deprived of food, water, and medical care. Each individual had less than a square meter of space: they were forced to sleep either sitting or standing. Ten hostages perished in the basement during those 27 days, and an additional 17 individuals lost their lives.
