Ukrainian armed forces in the Donetsk region have apprehended two Chinese nationals who were participating in the Russian military, as reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his social media on April 8.

“Our forces have taken into custody two Chinese citizens who were engaged in the Russian army. This occurred on Ukrainian soil – in the Donetsk region. We have documentation for these detainees, including bank cards and personal information,” he stated.

Zelensky further mentioned that Kyiv possesses intelligence indicating a significantly larger number of Chinese citizens within the occupying forces than just two. Efforts are currently underway to verify all details. Intelligence agencies, the Security Service of Ukraine, and relevant branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are actively involved in this process.

The detained Chinese nationals are currently in the custody of the Security Service of Ukraine. The President has also directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to “promptly reach out to Beijing to ascertain how China plans to respond to this situation.”

“Russia's involvement of China, whether directly or indirectly, in this European conflict is a clear indication that Putin is intent on prolonging the war. He is seeking avenues to continue the hostilities. This certainly warrants a response. A reaction from the United States, Europe, and all global entities that desire peace is necessary. Relevant investigative and operational measures are currently in progress,” he concluded.

During a press briefing, the President indicated that Chinese soldiers were apprehended following a confrontation near Tarasivka and Bilogorivka, where six Chinese soldiers were involved, according to the official website of the President of Ukraine. Zelensky pointed out that this represents yet another nation providing military support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, following Iran and North Korea.

“However, there is a distinction: while the North Koreans engaged us in the Kursk direction, the Chinese are fighting on Ukrainian territory. I believe this is a significant aspect that requires discussion with our partners,” he remarked.

  • On January 11, Zelenskyy announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had captured the first two military personnel from North Korea.
  • On September 9, 2024, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian chargé d'affaires regarding the potential supply of missiles to Russia.
